#22 Cyclones Battle West Virginia

By Michael O’Deay (@MODeay70) Game 8 @ West Virginia  Kickoff: 1:00 PM TV: ESPN+ Radio: Cyclone Radio Network

Oklahoma State Recap: Iowa State got a hard fought win against Oklahoma State. Breece Hall punched in a late rushing TD, for the 19th straight game, to give the Cyclones a 24-41 lead. The defense held Oklahoma State to a 3 and out. After an ISU punt, Oklahoma State had one final chance, their drive got past midfield, but the game ended when ISU held Oklahoma State on 4th and 2.

Know your opponent: West Virginia is 3-4 and 1-3 in Big 12 play. The Mountaineers won their first Big 12 game of the season @ TCU 29-17. The Mountaineers had lost their first 3 conference games to Oklahoma, Texas Tech, and Baylor. In the Oklahoma game, the Mountaineers played very tough, however, lost on a last second FG 16-13 in Norman.

The Series: West Virginia leads the overall series 5-4. Iowa State has won the last 3 games. Last season Iowa State won 42-6. The win clinched the Big 12 regular season championship.

The Game: The 22nd ranked Cyclones may be in for a dog fight. West Virginia played very tough against Oklahoma and Texas Tech. West Virginia is going to need Senior QB Jarret Doege to play big. For the season Doege is completing 66.5% of his passes for 1,701 yards 8 TDs and 5 picks.  The difference is going to be the defense. Iowa State is 3rd in the nation only giving up 263.6 yards per game. The Cyclones are also a very disciplined team with just 31 penalties through 7 games. With a big game Breece Hall could eclipse the 1,000 yard mark for the season. Hall has 818 rushing yards for the season. Keys to the Game: 1) Win the turnover battle 2) Win the line of scrimmage 3) Convert 3rd downs

The turnover battle is always big and could potentially be thee difference in any game. Iowa State hasn’t forced a ton of turnovers, however, they don’t give it away either. On the season ISU has forced 8 turnovers and recovered 6. ISU is allowing under 100 yards per game on the ground (99) and are 11th in FBS allowing 2.91 yards per rush.   I say converting 3rd downs every week because it’s what good football teams do. ISU has continued to improve each week and now converts 40% of their 3rd downs. They were efficient against K State and Oklahoma St converting 14-29 3rd downs for 48.27%.

My prediction: ISU gets a game that gets out of hand late 38-19.

Go Cyclones!
